The label

When looking at the label, make sure that the information is complete and as precise as possible:

Quality Grade: Always look for the highest quality grade, "Native Extra Virgin," not just "Virgin." The difference is significant, as clearly reflected in taste and quality. Of course, all my olive oils are of the highest quality grade, native extra virgin.

Origin: The origin should be clearly defined. "Greece" or "EU" is by no means sufficient! All my olive oils come from Spain, from the sunny Costa del Sol region, from olive oil mills that I have personally visited.

Harvest Year and Bottling: Pay special attention to ensure that your extra virgin olive oil comes from the current harvest.

Smell and Taste

It's always best to do a smell and/or taste test before buying. In supermarkets, this is usually not possible. For all my oils, I offer tasting before purchase. This way, you can quickly discover your favorite oil. Sometimes it also helps to compare a high-quality oil directly with an inferior oil. You will immediately taste the difference!

Smell: Do the smell test! The olive oil should smell fresh. Depending on the variety, it can smell like green grass, tomato vines, herbs, or artichoke. If it smells musty, earthy, or "chemical," the quality is poor. All my extra virgin olive oils are also available for tasting beforehand.

Taste: If it tastes slightly bitter or scratches a little in the throat, this is a sign of high quality. The higher the content of healthy polyphenols (against oxidative stress), the stronger it scratches.

You can find intense premium olive oils with a high polyphenol content here.

Appearance

Color: The color depends heavily on the olive variety used. It can vary greatly from golden yellow to bright green.

Consistency: If high-quality olive oil is stored in the refrigerator or in cool cellar rooms, it will solidify and begin to flake. This phenomenon is a sign of a high proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids. At room temperature, the flakes dissolve again and it becomes clear.
